Unity Candles and Candle Sets
Nothing symbolizes the union of two souls more than lighting a single candle together. Is is probably the most beautiful part of any wedding ceremony. Unity candles are versatile and go beyond the wedding. They can be used in anniversary celebrations, renewal of vows and even customized to second weddings to include uniting the children of two separate families as well as uniting the parents.
The history of the unity candle's use in wedding ceremonies is rather hazy. No one seems to know how it started. Some think it was a plot from candle manufacturers to sell more candles while others say it had its origins in the Protestant religion. The Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom each light a candle. The Bride and Groom then take the candles and light the middle (and larger) one together. This symbolizes unity of the couple and the families. Whatever the history (or conspiracy theory) of the unity candle -- it is certainly a beautiful thing.
